Marjorie Taylor Greene took the unusual step of formally advocating for disgraced former Congressman George Santos, arguing that his seven-year federal prison sentence represented a grave injustice. In a letter sent to the Justice Department's pardon attorney shortly after Santos began serving his term, the Georgia Republican stated the sentencing was an abusive overreach by the judicial system, though she maintained that punishment was warranted for his admitted crimes of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. She supported this plea by arguing that many of her current colleagues have committed far worse offenses yet faced no criminal charges, without specifying which individuals or actions she was referencing.

Her intervention followed a brief period where she had distanced herself from Santos, even voting against him during his expulsion from the House of Representatives in late 2023. The former congressman, who pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges stemming from lying to donors and Congress, had previously been a visible presence near Greene during the protracted Speaker election in January 2023. Greene stated in her commutation request that Santos was sincerely remorseful, accepted responsibility, and had served his constituents diligently during his short tenure in Washington.
