Rahul Gandhi on Babri Masjid

Rahul Gandhi has consistently positioned the Congress party as distinct from the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid, asserting that if a member of the Gandhi family had been Prime Minister at the time, the structure would have remained standing. This stance was notably expressed during election campaigning, where he sought to absolve his family and the party's present leadership of responsibility for the event. He implied that the demolition occurred due to the leadership of the time, often pointing implicitly toward the then-Prime Minister, Narasimha Rao, whose government presided over the incident.

More recently, the politician has reframed the political contest, claiming that his political bloc successfully defeated the Ram Temple movement—which was centered on Ayodhya—in the context of the 2024 general elections. He characterized the movement as an anti-Muslim ideology, distinct from true Hinduism, and suggested that the electoral defeat of the incumbent party in the Faizabad (Ayodhya) constituency symbolized a rejection of that movement's associated politics. This recent emphasis shifts the focus from historical culpability to current ideological opposition.
